The project _ Creating a product in style of the Japanese brand MUJI. The basis of MUJI‘s product development is characterized by minimalist design, pure functionality and products that are produced as efficiently as possible. Their focus is on bringing pleasure to people and beauty in their lives.
My mission _ The speaker is simple to produce and also to use. The interface is simple and understandable to every generation. The overall appearance peaceful, sturdy and minimalistic.
With cardboard I made quick mock-ups of shapes to get a feeling for the dimensions.
I started making a model out of foam to see how steep the draft angle appears in reality.
Unfortunately the foam prototype was pretty useless illustration of the actual model and details were impossible to be carved into the surface.
The first print of the prototype was really helpful to find the right dimensions and how the speaker appears in reality.
I had to try several prototypes of push-buttons before the last one eventually work fine.
I bought a speaker and disassembled it to see what sits inside and how it is arranged within.
Understated elegance _ The design is simple and plain and thus able to blend in. Its functionality is reduced to one user-friendly button to turn the speaker on/off. Through the gaps on the top of the speaker, sound will radiate and reflect around the room.
Colour _ White is a neutral and peaceful colour. The speaker does not have any branding, logo nor a colour highlight. It simply blends in and seems natural in its surroundings.
Simplification of packages _ The packaging is simplified to the extent of bare minimum to emphasize the natural qualities of the product, and minimizing both cost and waste.
